Three Boxes from Home

 

Okay. So the three boxes my mother brought down.  Mostly OPE because that's when I was collecting.  

BOX ONE

1989 Star Baseball

This was a prospects set, so most of the cards are of minor leaguers.  In fact, all the cards in this batch are minor leaguers.  Not sure if I never got any major leaguers or if I put them in a different box.  Anyway, it seems to be the first year of this product and the collation is worse than horrible.  Dupes out the wazoo.  So if you want some from this set, you can have 'em for cheap.  Looks like a 200-card set, and I have 54 of them.

The Clean-Up

 

-  So the madre visited.  We had lunch in the park and went to the art museum.  I gave her a book that had been sitting on my shelf for years.  Seemed interesting , but I never got around to it.  Anyway, she brought 3 more boxes of cards down.  So I'll do a post on those soon. 

-  I scored another free card from the Diamond King. 

The Diamond King 

-  I made a TCDB trade with Tom Brady.  Sent a few baseball cards to Florida and got 3 cards for my team pages in return. 

    

-  Saw on Twitter that if Tony Gwynn had gone hitless in his last 1,099 ABs he would still have hit .300 for his career.  

-  Tried one of Fuji's apples.  Was not impressed. 

Trick or Treat

The debate rages on.  Are the Sox the Boston Red Sox or do the Chicago White Sox have the legitimate claim to the coveted title?

Let's peruse their respective applications, because I don't know how to do accents over the internet.

AL Pennants:  12

AL East Division Titles:  10

Regular Season:  9,718 wins - .519

Most Famous Players:  Babe Ruth and Ted Williams

Miscellany:  Fenway Park is iconic, with the Green Monster.  The team went 86 years between WS titles.  Red Sox fans are annoying, but not as much as Dodgers fans or Yankees fans.  

WHITE SOX

Founded:  1901

World Series Titles:  3

AL Pennants:  6 

Division Titles:  6

Regular Season:  9,411 wins - .503 

Most Famous Player:  Shoeless Joe Jackson

Miscellany:  They're the #2 team in their own city.  The team is best known for a scandal.  One of the best basketball players of all-time played in their minor league system.  Their uniform history has to be the strangest and most fascinating in major North American sports leagues.  The team went 88 years between WS titles.      

Yes, that's Luke Appling.  If Jackson wanted his picture shown, he should have had a higher WAR as a White Sock. 

A Couple Trades

 

First, a TCDB trade with Joe.  I sent him 18 baseball cards and received 6 that fit my collection better.  

 

 

-  Carew as a Twin.

-  Juicer covering his face in shame.

-  The back of a Cal Jr card with a streak reference. 

-  The back of a Cutch card.  "Little girls weep".  LOL  

-  David Wright and Jose Bautista were the other two.  

-  All 6 filled team page slots.  

Then I traded a few cards to my dealer for store credit, which turned into these:

-  Fake auto card.  But it's a 1959 card of a player who had 8 All-Star seasons.

-  A Hall of Famer, but the cheapest of the 3 cards.

-  So now I have Ryan as a Ranger, Astro, and Angel, but not Met.  

-  All 3 are now in team pages.
