The All-Elliptical Team

Baseball players I've seen play in person.  Because this is what you get when I don't have acquisitions to report.  Ha.

Catcher:  Mike Piazza (Dodgers and Mets)

First Base:  Adrian Gonzalez (Padres)

Second Base:  Chase Utley (Phillies)

Third Base:  Mike Schmidt (Phillies)

Shortstop:  Derek Jeter (Yankees)

Left Field:  Rickey Henderson (A's and Padres)

Center Field:  Robin Yount (Brewers)

Right Field:  Tony Gwynn (Padres)

Starting Pitcher:  Steve Carlton (Phillies)

Closer:  Trevor Hoffman (Padres)

Prospects:  Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco  (Modesto A's)

  1. Solid team. I definitely saw Rickey, Mark, Jose, Jeter, and Gwynn. I'd say there's a 98% chance I've seen Hoffman pitch and Adrian Gonzalez play when he was with the Padres. The rest would only be a guess... but there's at least a 40 to 50% chance I've seen the rest.

    1. Inter-league play has made it easier. Though the Bay Area has both the A's and Giants anyway.

I'm horrible at remembering the players / teams I've seen, so I might have left somebody off.

Saw Deion, but he was a star in a different sport. Saw Todd Helton, Carlos Delgado, and Ryan Howard, but went with A Gon. Saw Jimmy Rollins and Barry Larkin. Missed Rivera, even though the Yanks had a save situation, because he had pitched three nights in a row.

  2. Pretty cool team.

Saw lots of big leaguers play at Tiger Stadium as a kid, 1967-73, including watching Nolan Ryan no-hit my Tigers in 1973.

Al Kaline would definitely be my guy in RF, with Bill Freehan catching Tom Seaver, who I saw pitch for the Reds in 1980 vs the Dodgers.

    Good Job!

    1. Well, I've never seen a no-hitter live. Though I watched Terry Mulholland throw one on TV and I heard Ryan throw one over the radio waves - 1990 against Oakland.

The Tigers had some studs back in the day.

  3. Is Chase Utley considered to be that good? I remember watching him play a few times many years ago, but don't recall noticing anything overly special about him.

    1. He was a 6-time All-Star and he won 4 Silver Slugger Awards. But he was just okay his last several seasons.

  4. I've seen exactly one player on your squad - Derek Jeter. Pretty sure it was his final season (2014) during a Yankees-Cubs interleague game at Wrigley.

    1. I think John might have us all beat if he ever compiles a full line-up.

  5. I like the concept! My team would be pretty slim. Randy Johnson, Ichiro, Bryce harper and Albert Pujols would be at the top of my list. Oh, and for Jon, Utley was actually quite underrated in my opinion. An extremely good baserunner and solid all around. But he didn't age well, and that hurts him a lot.
