Sparky Lyle: DuBois and a Girl

Sparky was born in DuBois, Pennsylvania, in 1944.  DuBois was named after lumber magnate, John DuBois (not civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois), who donated or funded many of the first buildings.  Though the small city would shift from lumber to coal mining as its main gig.

Other notable DuBoisians include:

Frank Fuller - NFL defensive tackle for nine seasons

Charles MacDonald - World War II fighter ace

Tom Mix (raised in) - silent film actor

Paul Vallely - retired U.S. Army Major General

This, from Tina Fey:  If you’re a die-hard ‘foodie', hop off the road in DuBois and enjoy a Subway sandwich made at a place that is eighty percent gas station.

Let's look at some of Sparky's Red Sox cards:

My MLB Team Pages: Colt .45s (Colts)

Staub is on my want list, as are Spangler and Raymond.

Fox is logoless.

Umbricht has been purchased and is en route.  So people who picked him get a point.

You have one day to submit your Cubs guesses.

My MLB Team Pages: Cardinals

When you're done laughing at the Dodgers for that double play, you should get your Colt .45 guesses submitted.  This page will consist solely of cards from the 1964 Topps set.

I might as well expand the prizes to Top Three.  Winner gets the best one though.

I'll also send a prize to anybody who gets a perfect score in any round.

Sparky Lyle: The Yankee Years

Sparky spent seven seasons with the Evil Empire: 1972 - 1978.  He was named to the AL All-Star team in 1973, '76, and '77.  In '77, he won the AL Cy Young Award.

The Yankees won AL East titles and AL pennants in 1976, '77, and '78.  They won the World Series in 1977 and '78.

Lyle co-authored (with Peter Golenbock) The Bronx Zoo, about the 1978 season.

There will be 18 points available for the Padres, 11 for the Phillies, and 18 for the Yankees.  So if you need to gain ground, those rounds should be your best chances.  Or hope the front-runners miss a day.

My MLB Team Pages: Braves

Acuna was included when the contest started, so if you picked him, you get a point.

A lot of people think I have a Hank Aaron card.

You have one day to submit your Brewers guesses.
