Card Collecting 14: Favorite Football Cards

This is another post suggested by Tim, from Cardpocalypse.  Favorite football cards in my collection:

1971 Topps #1 John Unitas Front   1970 Topps #30 Bart Starr Front

1970 Topps #59 Alan Page Front   1964 Philadelphia #136 Pete Retzlaff Front

Two members of the Holy Trinity.  Page's rookie card.  A 1964 Retzlaff - the oldest card I own of a notable player.

1999 SP Signature - Autographs #OZ Ozzie Newsome Front      2007 Donruss Classics - Significant Signatures Gold #131 John Mackey Front

Autographed post-retirement cards of Hall of Famers.

I also own an autographed Miles Sanders SN10 and an Emmitt Smith swatch card SN5, but they're Panini Black Friday so the pictures aren't up on TCDB.

Card Collecting 13: Incoming

So I traded with Chris (challgolfman on TCDB) and got this trio:

An Ainge for the multi-sport athlete collection I am NOT building.  Two Super Bowl MVPs for a collection I am building, though don't expect to finish for a long while.

I also received another batch of Free Friday cards from Brian of Highly Subjective and Completely Arbitrary:

2007 Topps #300 Vladimir Guerrero Front   2017 Topps Update - Topps Salute #USS-32 Josh Reddick Front

Vlad the Impaler needs no introduction.  I like me some defense.

1979-80 Topps #58 Bob Lanier Front   1979-80 Topps #5 Dave Cowens Front

Two of the best players in the 1970s.

1990-91 Score American #129 Steve Smith Front   1991-92 Score Canadian English #2 Al MacInnis Front

A guy with a lengthy career and an interesting story.  A 12-time All-Star.

2018 Score #128 DeAndre Hopkins Front   2018 Score #168 Aaron Donald Front

1992 Score #516 Andre Waters Front

A couple current era stars and a fun card of a prominent Eagle.

So yeah - Brian hooked me up nicely.  I sent him some cards but I don't know if he'll want them or not. Maybe he can trade them or use them for a future Free Friday.

Card Collecting 12: Waiting for a Starr to Fall

into my arms, baby, yeah.

So Tim, from Cardpocalypse, suggested a few ideas for blog posts.  One of them is favorite card acquired during quarantine.

Not only did I trade for this gem, but I got it from somebody who lives in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  I have now completed 2 / 3 of the Holy Trinity.

The wait is over, yet the music remains.

Card Collecting 11: Repack Adventures

So I made another trip to Walgreen's and they only had one football repack so I bought it along with two baseball repacks.

1990 Score #582 Joe Montana Front   1993 Playoff #5 Jim Kelly Front

2010 Topps #96 Aaron Hernandez Front   2013 Topps #8 Antonio Brown Front

1982 Topps #411 George Rogers Front   1996 Pinnacle #57 Tim Brown Front

I already had the Montana, but he's a Hall of Famer so I don't mind another one.  Kelly's another Hall of Fame QB.  The Hernandez rookie and the AB action shot in a throwback uni would fit nicely in a bad boy collection if I had one.  A couple Heisman Trophy winners on the bottom.

The pack in both was 2020 Leaf Draft.  My haul included a Tee Higgins All American gold parallel and a J.K. Dobbins Touchdown Kings, but the fronts aren't up yet on TCDB.

Others:  Cortez Kennedy, Steve Smith, Derrick Thomas, Thurman Thomas, etc.

1982 Fleer #149 Don Money Front   1984 Fleer #213 Ted Simmons Front

2018 Topps #79 J.T. Realmuto Front   1991 Upper Deck #677 Carlton Fisk / Robin Ventura Front

1986 Topps Woolworth Collectors' Series #18 Fred Lynn Front   1991 Conlon Collection TSN #114 Urban Shocker Front

2019 Topps Opening Day #150 Jacob deGrom Front   2019 Topps Opening Day #41 Jose Altuve Front

2019 Topps Opening Day - 150 Years of Fun #YOF-1 Ty Cobb Front   1981 Topps #720 Fred Lynn Front

1981 Topps #350 J.R. Richard Front   1981 Topps #693 Steve Howe Front

The first of the two baseball boxes was overloaded with 1980s Brewers. Like obsessively so, but no Yount or Molitor, which was kind of annoying.  There were three Cecil Coopers, a Gorman Thomas, a Jim Gantner, a Rollie Fingers, a Ben Oglivie, and some random guys.  I don't know how that Dolphins RB got into a baseball box.  Carlton Fisk and Robin Ventura in throwback unis.  A goofy Fred Lynn card from Woolworth department store.  One of the best names in the history of baseball.  The pack in each box was 2019 Topps Opening Day.  Closing out the viewing with 1981 Topps and Steve Howe's rookie card.

Others: Mo Vaughn, Frank Viola, Ryan Braun, Jeff Bagwell, Andy Van Slyke, etc.

Card Collecting 10: Goal Completed

I mentioned my Special Special Teamers set in an earlier post.  Well, I have acquired a Stephen Gostkowski card and the set is now complete.

Every special teams player that was named to one of the following NFL all-star teams:

100th Anniversary Team
75th Anniversary Team
1970s All-Decade Team
1980s All-Decade Team
1990s All-Decade Team
2000s All-Decade team
2010s All-Decade Team

I'll just post some highlights here, and if you want to view my entire list you can follow the TCDB link below.

1972 Topps #61 Jan Stenerud Front   1977 Topps #320 Ray Guy Front

2010 Topps #417 Shane Lechler Front   1975 Topps #352 Fred Cox Front

1972 Topps #110 Gale Sayers Front

1969 Topps #252 Jerrel Wilson Front   1984 Topps #300 Morten Andersen Front

2005 Topps #277 David Akers Front   2019 Score - Red #89 Justin Tucker Front

It's a 32-player list, plus three players who were notable in other ways. Fred Cox is one of the latter group.

Card Collecting 9: Big Trade

So I traded with Leo (LO212257 on TCDB).  Sent him 45 cards (plus a few extras) and received 22 better cards.  Let's look at a few.

1989 Donruss #193 Mike Schmidt Front

I'm usually hesitant to trade for junk era baseball, because I still have several boxes of uncatalogued cards at my mother's house.  But I can make an exception for Schmidt.

2011-12 Hoops #270 Kevin Durant Front

The T from Run TMC.

1981 Topps #250 Bill Bergey Front   1982 Topps #189 Lester Hayes Front

1990 Score #582 Joe Montana Front   1988 Topps #43 Jerry Rice Front

It's possible that I like the All-Pro cards.  Ha.

1990 Fleer #79 Jerome Brown Front   1990 Fleer #256 Bo Jackson Front

1991 Upper Deck #154 Deion Sanders Front   2015 Topps Valor #144 Calvin Johnson Front

The Brown takes slot #79 in my Club 100 frankenset.  Bo and Deion - the best multi-sport stars of the era.  I had to dump a few of my Megatron cards because the opposing team was the Eagles. So it's nice to add this Topps Valor.

2014 Topps #128 Stephen Gostkowski Front   2015 Topps #164 Stephen Gostkowski Front

I believe Gostkowski completes my Special Special Teamers set. I just have to double check.  I like the action shot in the first one, but it's a ho card.  So I made sure to get the second one as a fall-back option.

The Other Eight:
1987 Topps:  Ron Brown.  More multi-sport goodness. Got his autograph at a track meet back in the day.
1990 Fleer:  Deion Sanders, Clyde Simmons, and Jerry Rice.
1990 Score:  John Elway and Rod Woodson All-Pro.
2015 Topps Valor:  Mike Evans and Demaryius Thomas.  I prefer the 2014 design, but I got three good WRs in this trade so not complaining.

Thanks for reading.
